C1 Atlas

Overview

The topmost bone in your spine that your skull sits on, named after the Greek Titan who held up the world.

Detailed Description

The atlas (C1) is the first cervical vertebra, uniquely adapted to support the skull and allow nodding movements. Unlike other vertebrae, it lacks a vertebral body and spinous process, consisting primarily of two lateral masses connected by anterior and posterior arches.

The atlanto-occipital joint (skull-C1) primarily allows flexion and extension, contributing significantly to the ability to look up and down. In ELDOA methodology, this junction requires specific attention due to its unique mechanics and importance for overall cervical function.

Dysfunction at C1 can contribute to headaches, upper cervical pain, and balance issues due to the density of proprioceptors in this region. ELDOA approaches the upper cervical region with particular care, using positions that create space without excessive force.
