Overview
Keeping the cushions between your spine bones full of water so they stay plump and work well.
Detailed Description
Disc hydration refers to the water content within intervertebral discs, which is essential for their shock-absorbing function and overall health. The nucleus pulposus, the gel-like center of the disc, is approximately 80% water in healthy young adults.
ELDOA promotes disc hydration through the decompression mechanism. When pressure on a disc is reduced, osmotic forces draw water into the nucleus pulposus, improving disc height and resilience. This is similar to how a sponge absorbs water when pressure is released.
Daily activities, particularly prolonged sitting and axial loading, gradually compress discs and reduce their water content. Regular ELDOA practice counteracts this by creating periods of decompression that allow discs to rehydrate, maintaining their height and function.
