Overview
Stretching that targets both muscles (myo) and fascia together as connected chains. Goes beyond regular stretching to address the whole web of tissue that wraps around your muscles.
Detailed Description
Myofascial stretching is an approach to flexibility training that recognizes the interconnected nature of muscles and fascia. Unlike traditional stretching that focuses on isolated muscles, myofascial stretching addresses entire fascial chainsβcontinuous lines of connective tissue that span multiple joints and body regions.
The technique typically involves positioning the body to create tension along specific myofascial meridians, then holding these positions for extended periods (often 60 seconds or more) to allow fascial tissues to release and reorganize. This longer duration is necessary because fascia responds more slowly to stretch than muscle tissue.
Dr. Guy Voyer developed specific myofascial stretching sequences (SomaTraining) that complement ELDOA exercises. While ELDOA focuses on spinal decompression, myofascial stretching addresses the global fascial system, creating a comprehensive approach to structural optimization. The combination addresses both local (segmental) and global (whole-body) restrictions.
Key Principles
- Address fascial chains, not isolated muscles
- Sustained holds of 60+ seconds
- Full-body positioning for chain tension
- Breathing integration for tissue release
- Progressive edge exploration
- Awareness of global tissue connections
Benefits
- Improved flexibility along entire fascial lines
- Release of fascial adhesions and restrictions
- Better tissue hydration and glide
- Enhanced proprioception
- Reduced compensatory patterns
- Complementary to ELDOA practice
