Scoliosis

Overview

When your spine curves sideways like an S

Eldoa needs to be extra careful and gentle for people with scoliosis.

Detailed Description

Scoliosis is a three-dimensional spinal deformity involving lateral curvature (frontal plane), rotation (transverse plane), and altered sagittal curves. While structural scoliosis involves bony changes, functional scoliosis results from muscular imbalances, leg length discrepancies, or habitual postures.

ELDOA offers unique benefits for scoliosis management by addressing each spinal segment individually. Rather than treating the spine as a single unit, ELDOA positions can target specific levels within or adjacent to the curve, promoting better segmental mobility and potentially influencing curve progression. This is particularly valuable for functional curves and in managing symptoms associated with structural curves.

For scoliosis, ELDOA protocols typically include: (1) convex-side stretching to address shortened tissues, (2) segment-specific decompression at apical vertebrae, (3) integration of rotational control exercises, and (4) breathing work to address rib cage asymmetries. While ELDOA cannot "cure" structural scoliosis, it can improve function, reduce discomfort, and potentially slow progression, especially when started early.

Common Signs and Symptoms

  • Pain or discomfort in affected area
  • Limited range of motion
  • Muscle tension or stiffness
  • Compensatory movement patterns
  • Reduced functional capacity
  • Impact on daily activities

ELDOA Protocol Guidelines

  1. Start with gentle, modified positions
  2. Practice 3-5 times per week initially
  3. Hold positions for 30-60 seconds
  4. Focus on pain-free ranges of motion
  5. Gradually increase intensity and duration
  6. Monitor progress and adjust as needed
